This paper presents a maximum ratio combining (MRC) adaptive array antenna that is mounted on a vehicle roof for secure emergency communications. The array is comprised of orthogonally arranged dipole elements, which are combined by means of weight functions that are determined by the cross-polarization power ratio (XPR) in a propagation environment and the antenna skew angle caused by vehicle rotation. The analytical results show that the required signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) for the proposed antenna to achieve a prescribed signal bit error rate (BER) for a QPSK signal is lower than that for a conventional dipole array, even in the case of a 90-degree antenna rotation, which is encountered in car accidents involving vehicle rollover.
