Abstract

Toyama Prefecture produces large amounts of biomass waste, such as bamboo chips and crab shells, which are difficult to dispose of. In contrast, earthquake-induced liquefaction has been reported in many countries around the world in recent years. Although the use of cement to control liquefaction has been common in the past, there are concerns about the environmental impact of cement use and new materials are expected to improve the ground. The idea was to see if the soil could be improved by adding fine-grained samples of bamboo chips and crab shells to the existing soil. Therefore, the authors carried out cyclic triaxial and consolidated-undrained triaxial test using the soil mixed with bamboo powder or crab powders. The results showed that mixtures of bamboo powder or crab powder increased liquefaction strength and cohesion. The results of a multi-faceted study of the factors that increase liquefaction strength and cohesion, based on microscopic observations using SEM, are also reported.
